Overview

A mobile application that allows users to browse through hymnal songs, different categories, recently viewed hymns, and their favourite hymns.

Context

It was the last Friday of the year 2020, and I went to a general church vigil. It was time to sing a hymn, and I observed that most people in the congregation did not sing along because they did not have access to the hymnbook, as limited copies were printed for sale.

My Role

As a Product Designer, I observed and discovered the problem, made a few assumptions, conducted qualitative user research to validate and invalidate my assumptions, and then ideated on possible solutions.

Design Methodology

I used the design thinking approach with a few alterations. Listed here is how I solved the problem.

  • Identify a problem and make assumptions.

  • Research and Analysis.

  • Draw insights and findings.

  • Ideation, List features and sub-features.

  • User-flow, Sketches and Wireframes.

  • Style guide and High-fi design.

  • Prototype and Usability testing.

User Research

The qualitative user research method (User Interview) was used to get data and also to observe the behaviour of end-users. I listed the objectives of the user research and what the user research should address and interviewed 4 participants. The research questions are listed below.

  • What is your name?

  • What do you do?

  • What is your daily activities like?

  • Do you have the Gpa Hymnbook?

  • If yes, how often do you use it?

  • If no, why don’t you have it?

  • What do you think about Gpa having an App for hymnal songs?

  • Do you think an Hymns app would improve and help people know more hymnal songs? Expatiate

  • Have you used an hymns app before?

  • If yes, can you describe the experience?

  • What do you think about an app that’d be able to sing the hymns?

  • What other features would you love to see in the any hymns app?

Research Analysis

The user research results were analysed, and 2 key user groups were identified (those with the hymnbook and those without the hymnbook).

Insights and Findings

1

Users want to have easy access to hymnal songs.

2

Users love the idea of having a hymn app.

3

Users want a solution with a smooth experience that is accessible and easy to use.

Ideation

1

How might we ensure easy access to hymnal songs?

2

How might we make more people accustomed to hymnal songs?

3

How might we ensure proper retention of hymnal songs?

Features and Sub-features

  • Hymns classification.

  • Language switch (English & Yoruba).

  • Increasing text size.

  • Search bar.

  • Recently viewed hymns.

  • List of favourites hymns.

  • Playing hymnal songs.

  • Key signature of hymns.

  • Switching to the next and previous hymns.

Sketches

I took my time to sketch and iterate on each screen of the design. Before sketching, I first identified the number of screens required and ensured that the sketches addressed the insights generated.

Digital Wireframes

In the first stage of converting the sketches to digital wireframes, I made sure that the screens were intuitive enough for users to use.

High-fi Designs

Prototype

Usability Testing

I tested the mobile app with 4 Users, of which 2 are Product Designers. The following observations were made:

1

Users had no issues navigating the Mobile App.

2

For accessibilty, the 16, 18 and 20px in the settings and Hymnal song screens should be replaced with Small, Medium, and Large.

Expansion Possibilities

1

Development of the Mobile App.

2

Users can choose whether to play the Hymnal songs with or without voice i.e. Voice+Organ or Organ alone.
