It all started in March 2021, when I received a WhatsApp message from the Project Owner (Abolaji Kareem) welcoming me back from NYSC Camp. He sent a pdf of the product overview and asked me to read it and get back to him. I read it and was intrigued, so I decided to join the team.
Voter Apathy among Nigerian Youths. It is understandable why many Nigerians, especially the youths, have developed a fixed mindset toward our political system. For many decades, our generation and the generations before us have trusted the future of this country in the hands of people who have failed to deliver on their promises. Voter Apathy occurs when eligible voters decide not to vote in an election because they feel that their participation will not make a difference. The challenges facing Nigeria today demand competent leaders elected in positions where they can impact positive change.
• According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the voter turnout for the 2019 general elections was less than 35% of all registered voters.
• Reports show that Nigeria wasted over N255 billion due to low voter turnout in the last 3 general elections.
We created an online platform for educating voters because we strongly believe in the power and judgement of the Nigerian people to elect credible and competent candidates when given access to the right information. Our objectives are:
1
To promote voter education across several communities.
2
To improve citizens’ access to important information.
3
To increase participation in the 2023 general elections.
I was given the task of leading the UX Design Team (6 Designers) to work on the experience and interface of the project.
PICTURES FROM THE FIRST PHYSICAL MEETING (INT. CCHUB, SABO, YABA, LAGOS) - APRIL, 2022
The project started with a meeting with the UX Design Team to define the methodology and approach of the project. We concluded that we needed to get quantitative data, hence, the survey. We decided on the questions using Google Sheets and discussed them with other team members before concluding on the questions for the survey. The questions:
What is your occupation?
Your gender?
Which geo-political zone can you vote from?
What is your state of residence?
Kindly select your age range?
Do you have a PVC (Permanent Voter's Card)?
Have you ever voted in previous elections?
Do you intend to vote in the 2023 general elections?
What are your major concerns about the 2023 general elections?
How do you think these concerns can be effectively resolved?
Why do you think many Nigerian youths are not interested in the voting exercise?
What do you think can be done to significantly improve voter turnout among Nigerian youths in the 2023 general elections?
We got data from the 6 Geo-political regions in Nigeria and closed the survey after 119 responses and analysed the data.
1
37.9% of the participants have their PVC, 30.1% don’t, 22.3% have registered and haven’t gotten theirs.
2
54.4% have not voted in previous elections, 38.8% have voted before.
3
57.3% intend to vote in the 2023 general elections, 2.3% do not, and 20.4% are sceptical about it.
From the research, we discovered that there are 3 major reasons for voter apathy among Nigerians:
A lack of trust in the political and electoral systems.
Fear of electoral violence and insecurity.
Inadequate voter education and uninformed decisions.
We conducted a competitive analysis on 3 previous solutions, pointing out what is working and what is not.
govote.ng
yvotenaija.com
wardchat (A Mobile App)
The brand identity designer (Ayilara AbdulQowiyy) did a really good job on the logo design.
Poppins font family and the Inter font family were the two options we had. We selected Poppins after a vote.
Since the project has to do with Nigeria, we decided to go for green.
Some of the interfaces designed.
Leading the UX Design team on the comrade.ng project helped me understand what it takes to be a team leader, as it was the first team I led. I also realised how teamwork can accelerate the achievement of goals. I learnt that one should be open-minded and always ready to act based on the users’ needs at that time. Thanks to Abolaji Kareem for believing in me.
